Energy experts from member nations of Asean and Asean+3 (China, Japan and South Korea) will discuss the adverse impact of energy shortage at the 2006 International Energy Conference For Sustainable Asia to be held here from Nov 26 to 28.

They will also work towards formulating a set of strategy towards innovative and sustainable energy development, including minimising energy wastages and development of new and renewable energy resources.

India and Japan agreed on Wednesday to step up cooperation in the energy sector, according to a joint statement released by Indian Ministry of External Affairs here Wednesday.

The Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs Taro Aso on Wednesday held talks with Indian Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed, Minister of Commerce and Industry Kamal Nath and National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan here.
The cooperation in energy sector will be achieved through implementation of action plan agreed upon between India and Japan in September 2005. (...)

Govt to seek cut in oil dependency
Japan will seek to cut its rate of dependence on oil as a primary energy source from the current 50 percent to 40 percent or less by 2030 in the wake of an intensifying global race to secure energy resources, sources said Thursday.
According to the sources, the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry will shortly announce the goal as part of its new policy guidelines, the first to include numerical targets on energy resources. With China's growing demand for energy and other factors taken into account, the guidelines are aimed at enhancing Japan's national security. PARIS An incident in China in early December offered hope, to some at least, that the trend of environmental degradation that has accompanied the country's rapid industrialization might soon change.
After sustained protests over the construction of a large power plant and the sale of a local lake, residents of Dongzhou, a fishing village near Hong Kong, seized the plant. The police moved in, and as many as 20 residents were killed as the police opened fire in the ensuing melee, according to reports disseminated globally.
